With Tom Brady out for the first four games of the 2016 season, everybody on the team is sure to feel the effects, but the defense will have to step up the most. Without the greatest QB of all time leading the offense, the pressure will be on the D to keep Jimmy Garoppolo and the offense in games with lower scores. This Monday night, on CSN's Quick Slants , Devin McCourty, Pats free safety and defensive captain, gave his two cents about Brady's suspension.
Said the Pro Bowler, "Everyone's going to talk about Tom, obviously. Starting quarterback, obviously our leader for the last decade-plus not being able to play in the first four games. We understand that. It's been something that's been over our head the past two years. Past that, we're like every other football team. Guys have to come out and earn spots and compete." When asked if it felt good to finally get some relief from the uncertainty, McCourty responded like a true Patriot. "I would have rather had last year's turnout because he wound up playing, but I think we all know what we have to do. Obviously we support him and all the decisions made toward it but this is what it is now and we have to prepare and go out there and play."
It's definitely an expected response from a guy like McCourty, who is a captain and a big proponent of the Patriot Way, but it still bears repeating. While Tom Terrific might be out, the team will still be expected to perform at a high level in his absence. With veteran leaders like McCourty at the helm, they can definitely do it.
