It's been a couple months, but former Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones has given a few comments about getting traded and his relationship with Bill Belicheck. Speaking with USA Today yesterday, Jones said that he didn't even get to speak with the New England head coach the day he was sent to the Arizona Cardinals, but he did thank Belicheck for "not trading me to a crappy team." Bill's reaction? "He laughed" said Jones, who maintains that he still has a good relationship with the Patriots, despite a few jibes.
According to the defensive end, he thought that he was traded because it was the last year of his rookie deal -- not because of an earlier incident involving synthetic marijuana, which left him shirtless in a Boston police station. "When it happened, it was just a tad shocking." He claimed. "But I packed my bags and moved on." For better or for worse, that's an attitude that will serve him well in the NFL. After his rookie deal expires at the end of this year, he could find himself on the move again--any way you slice it, he will command big money in a great market for premier pass-rushers.
As he said, "I really don't have a lot of personal goals. I'm going to approach this year like another year, trying to do better, trying to be a better Chandler Jones, and I'll let everything else take care of itself." It will be interesting to see how that plays out Week 1, when Jones will reunite with his former teammates and coaches in the desert. In a make-or-break year for the young up-and-comer, the outcome could change his career.
