UPDATE: Julian Edelman believed to have torn ACL

Matt Stone / Boston Herald

Wide receiver Julian Edelman suffered a non-contact knee injury in the first quarter of the Patriots' preseason contest against the Lions. He was carted off the field, but is still eligible to possibly return according to the team's official Twitter account.

Edelman hauled in 3 catches for 52 yards on the opening drive. He's coming off a season in which he caught just shy of 100 passes for over 1,100 yards while serving as Tom Brady's primary receiving target. The exact nature and severity of the injury aren't known at this time, though it's a good sign he wasn't immediately ruled out of the game.

UPDATE: Edelman's injury is believed to be an ACL tear, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The receiver is headed back to Boston for an MRI tomorrow to evaluate the extent of the injury.
