ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have acquired Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo for a second-round pick in the 2018 draft.

While Garoppolo's name has come up in trade rumors for much of the past year, the return for the Pats here is surprisingly low. On the night of the 2017 draft, the Patriots reportedly turned down the Cleveland Browns' offer, which was almost certainly more than a second-rounder--making this deal that much more puzzling.

With both Jacoby Brissett and now Garoppolo gone, Tom Brady is currently the only quarterback on the Patriots depth chart. The team will most likely have to sign someone over the bye week to fill in as backup until the end of the year.

This article will be updated as more information becomes available.
