Patriots reportedly considered selecting Alabama WR Calvin Ridley in first round
USA Today Sports
Star Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley was drafted #26 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in this year's draft. However, he may have come close to ending up in New England instead:
Interesting note from @MikeReiss this morning.. Aside from Isaiah Wynn, Alabama WR Calvin Ridley was one of the other players #Patriots were considering picking with their first first round pick in April's draft.
The Pats have had a checkered history taking wide receivers high in the draft, which makes this report curious to say the least. With second-round busts like Chad Jackson and Aaron Dobson still in memory and an already loaded depth chart at the position, taking a smaller, not-insanely-fast wideout like Ridley would undoubtedly have been controversial. It's obviously still too early to make a real decision, but at first glance addressing a position of need with Georgia O-lineman Isaiah Wynn was a more prudent move.
