Anthony Gonzalez released by the Patriots

WEEI.com
The Patriots announced several roster moves on Tuesday afternoon, including the release of veteran wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez and the signings of unrestricted free agent offensive lineman Jamey Richard, rookie free agent tight end Nick Melillo and seventh-round draft choice, defensive back Alfonzo Dennard (which had been previously reported).

Honestly, this was more a matter of when he would be released. Gonzalez has struggled with injuries since being drafted by the Colts (11 games in three years) and was seen as one of the long shots to make the roster, especially in a crowded wide receiver corps.

Gonzalez was also a bit of slot insurance with the possiblity of Wes Welker holding out being a real threat at the time Gonzalez signed.

The Patriots signed Gonzalez to a team-friendly deal and will not lose much by releasing him. Gonzalez was not present at the Patriots Thursday OTA, so it's possible an injury could've triggered this move.
