Deadline day for Wes Welker and the Patriots

Well folks it's deadline day.

Wes Welker is either getting an extension today, or the Russian Roulette the Pats have played with this most productive of receivers is on hold until the end of the upcoming season.

ESPN's Mike Reiss is not optimistic about a long term deal. "A Hail Mary remains possible," writes Reiss. "but as of late Saturday night the expectation is the New England Patriots and receiver Wes Welker will not reach a contract extension by Monday's 4 p.m. ET deadline for franchise-tagged players."

With the new CBA projecting a relatively flat salary cap for at least the next two years, it is also extremely unlikely Welker will get franchised again next year. He would be due a 144% raise. For those of you who are wondering if Wes Welker is worth an extension consider this, since 2007 Welker's 554 receptions leads the league. Brandon Marshall is second with just 474 catches and Reggie Wayne is third with 472.
