Patriots sign RB Lex Hilliard, work out Mike Kafka

ESPNBoston:
The Patriots have signed free agent running back Lex Hilliard and released offensive lineman Matt Tennant, the team announced.

Tennant was claimed via waivers on Saturday, while Hilliard was among the final cuts of the Minnesota Vikings prior to the deadline to finalize 53-man rosters.

After Spencer Larsen went down with injury, the Patriots were basically without a fullback, and many believed they would carry one due to Josh McDaniel's presence. Fullback Eric Kettani was released on cutdown day, then signed to the practice squad, and then released again today.

Hiliard was a draft pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2008 and was used occasionally as a fullback with them.

Also of note, the Patriots reportedly worked out former Eagles quarterback Mike Kafka today. It's possible that Kafka could join the team on the practice squad as the Pats only have two QBs on the roster after releasing Brian Hoyer.
