Aqib Talib re-signs, one-year deal with the Patriots [Update: Money]

The Patriots defense - particularly the secondary - struggled mightily to start the 2012 season. The Patriots then made an uncharacteristic trade at the NFL trade deadline, sending a third round pick to the Buccaneers for Aqib Talib. Things started to turn around after that as, under the radar, the Patriots defense turned into one of the better units around the league after that trade.

Of course, it was only a rental as Talib's deal expired after the reason. There was a big question as to whether or not they would bring him back, and it appears as if they'll be giving him one more year.

As Mike Reiss reported earlier, Aqib Talib was probably dissatisfied with the market price for cornerbacks this year (it was cheap) so he was probably wanting a one-year deal so that he can try again on a big contract next year.

The Patriots were apparently open for either, but they had the biggest advantage in a one year deal because they could offer more. This is a great move for the Patriots who have been making moves to shore up their secondary this offseason. They've signed Adrian Wilson and brought back slot corner Kyle Arrington. With a deep draft of corners - and the Pats showing interest in Tyrann Mathieu - they could field a very talented unit next season.

We will update as details come out.

[Update]

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk essentially confirms that Talib turned down multiple year offers from the Patriots. Smart move on his part.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, there were two other multi-year options that Talib was close to taking. But Talib decided in the end, like so many others have done under the new labor deal, to sign a short-term deal and then to hit the market again in 2014.
