Bring in Danario!
Yesterday it was reported that the Patriots have shown some interest in the biggest free agent on the market: speedster Mike Wallace. Even though the team is in clear need of a outside receiver given the fact it looks like Brandon Lloyd is unlikely to return, I was a bit surprised to hear the Patriots were thinking about Wallace.
How serious they are about bringing him in we don't know; but we do know Wallace is looking to command one of the biggest receiver salaries in the league. Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald type loot. If this is the case, I would prefer the Patriots not go after him, as I think they should invest the majority of the money they have available in the defense.
Today, I was thrilled to hear that Chargers receiver Danario Alexander may be available:
A former standout at Missouri, Alexander was picked up by the St. Louis Rams in 2010 after going undrafted. Last year he caught 37 passes for 657 yards and 7 touchdowns, despite only playing in the months of November and December. (many fantasy owners will recall him being perhaps the best free agent pick-up of the season) Given this breakout performance, some may be surprised that Alexander is available at a discount.
But the reason the Chargers are hesitant to invest in him is the same reason he went undrafted in 2010: major knee concerns. At just 24 years old, Alexander has already had five knee procedures. It scared teams away from drafting him and appears as if it may scare the Chargers away from bringing him back.
I am a big fan of Danario, and if healthy he could be the perfect solution for the Patriots wide receiver issue. He is big, physical, and has the play-making ability at the position that the team has missed since the Randy days. He is 6'5", 217 pounds, and is a receiver who can beat corners with his strength and speed. He is certainly not one to throw himself to the ground every time he touches the ball, like a bitch (Brandon LLoyd).
Clearly the concerns with his health are substantial. Some are speculating he may be headed for a reunion with Norv Turner in Cleveland. But if he does become available as is being anticipated, and he comes at a bargain, this is a player I could realistically see the Patriots bringing in.

"Caplan reports that the Chargers are seriously considering putting the lowest possible tender on Alexander, and since Alexander was an undrafted free agent, they would receive no compensation if another team set an offer that the Chargers decided not to match. That low tender was placed on Saturday and was confirmed by multiple reports."
