Deeper Look Into Wilson Signing

Adrian Wilson has just signed with the Patriots to help bring some veteran leadership and fortify the secondary. I am excited to see the Patriots focus shift to defense as I’m sure all fans are. They ranked in the bottom 7 the past 3 years in the secondary. From third down conversions to plays over 20 yards it was all bad, and it was the clear deficiency with the Patriots.

In other good news it seems no team is interested in Talib and reports have the Patriots working on a deal with him. The fact that more teams showed interest in Arrington means the Patriots will likely get a killer deal for Talib. I’m thinking the Patriots are looking at something along the lines of two years (max), at 16 million with 7 to 8 million guaranteed.

In a previous article I may have seemed a little disinterested in Adrian Wilson and I won’t backtrack, but it will be good to have a former All-Pro safety back there. I just happen to think at this stage of his career he’s not the Ed Reed type that I was maybe hoping for. Nonetheless, we have Wilson and the point I did make is this signing is a good thing for the Patriots. No one could be worse than Gregory in some of those games last season and Adrian Wilson has legitimate all-pro talent. He also hits hard as hell which I love.

Due to age I am concerned because his stats have reflected just that, trending down. Still I am optimistic about having a safety that, to his core, knows how to cover; that skill has seriously been lacking. The best thing he will bring is his leadership. He has been known to be a leader on the field and it may have been the Patriots biggest problem in the secondary, just the lack of communication. With veteran leadership comes the wherewithal to know that communication is the key to success. The Patriots never lacked talent (I repeat never) in the secondary; they lacked communication and play makers. Adrian Wilson brings both of those traits as a player.

Also, even though he is older he has a tremendous Games Played stat: in the past 5 years he’s only missed two games. He is surprisingly durable and that is another component I’m excited about. With Talib, Wilson, Arrington and McCourty, I think the secondary actually looks okay. Arrington is a wildcard, but he doesn’t lack talent, he lacked experience and someone telling him where to be. On top of that Dennard will be coming back at some point mid season and it shapes up to look pretty good; I’ll take it. Welcome to New England Adrian Wilson.
