Tavon Austin has a Work Out Scheduled with Patriots

CBS Sport’s draft insiders report that West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin has a workout scheduled with the New England Patriots sometime in the near future. At the combine, Austin seemed to intrigue many teams as he stayed late to return kicks for representatives of the 29 teams left watching.

Austin has been projected to go in the first round, but may just fall into the Patriots lap due to his lack of size. Whenever a player is smaller, teams fear the player won’t be durable or able to handle the constant beat-down of the NFL.

The 5 foot 8 Austin ran a 4.34 in the 40-yard dash (that’s fast) at the combine and based on his seemingly full slate, I’d say he impressed quite the number of teams. Austin could make an impact on special teams as well as be a play maker in the slot position. He specializes in quick moves in the short intermediate game like Welker, but has the ability to go long, bearing in mind it was against college defenses.

Tavon Austin even played a little bit of running back in college for West Virginia; his versatility is something that, you know, gets Belichick all warm inside. In the 2012 season he had 72 rushing attempts for 643 yards and 3 touchdowns. His longest rush from scrimmage was 74 yards showing that ability to separate with his speed and shiftiness.

As a receiver in 2012, his average yards per catch was 11.3 showing that he is a player that is more than capable of moving the chains. Rookies carry little financial risk and for an offense that just lost a few play makers in Welker, Woodhead, Lloyd and possibly Edelman, he might be able to give them a lift. In 2012, Austin posted a 114 reception season with 12 touchdowns and 1,289 yards.

Austin is also slated to work out for the Carolina Panthers as well as several meetings with other undisclosed teams. He is projected to go in the mid-first round so don’t get your hopes up. Also, don’t get your hopes up about the Patriots staff’s ability to find good receivers; their track record isn’t so great.
