Welker Signs with Denver and I Blame Josh McDaniels

I have to be dreaming. The Patriots just let Wes Welker walk. When I originally started talking about this, I was thinking the he would go $28million/4 years, but he walked for a $12 million/2 year deal in Denver. The Patriots would not match a two-year... $12 million deal. That is chump change. The Patriots signed a five year extension with Aaron Hernandez worth an average of $7.5 million a year. Gronkowski is getting something like $9 million a year for six years. I am not saying those are mistakes, but THIS IS A HUGE MISTAKE. We could not send a little Welker's way? Sign him last year to a four year deal worth $5-$6million a year and not be in this mess and save the cap we wasted by franchise tagging him last year?!

The Patriots have $25 Million in Cap Space according to Bedard's piece yesterday. This Cap Space is expected to increase with a potential release of Daniel Fells, Brandon Lloyd, and winning an injury grievance of Jonathan Fanene. The Patriots would not spend it all for various reasons, and if you want to look at those reasons go to Bedard's piece here.

Money does not seem to be an issue, especially as the Patriots are completely and utterly dormant in the Free Agency right now. Amendola was linked to the Patriots, but he has also been linked to the Eagles. Josh Cribbs is the only other big name in serious talks with the Patriots. I normally want to just say "In Bill I Trust" and leave it at that, but I cannot help but think this is a horrible mistake.

I do not know any reason for allowing this to happen seeing as Wes Welker is the only wide receiver on the Patriots who is not injury prone. We most likely will be trading Welker for Danny Amendola, and in the process saving a couple million but trading in around twenty catches and four games. Worth it? No way. We do not know how Amendola and Brady will connect.

Who is to blame? Josh McDaniels. He is known for his talent spotting (THAT IS SARCASTIC). Brandon Lloyd? BUST. Tebow in the first round? BUST. DeMaryius Thomas? Not proven, even with Manning. Michael Hoomanawaniui? ROASTED IN THE PLAYOFFS.

Having said all of that, I say we just go ahead and put our faith in the failed head coach, failed offensive coordinator in St. Louis, and trade in Welker for a couple million and Danny Amendola's shattered collarbone.

This is a travesty. Robert Kraft, you do not have to hope that Welker is a Patriot for life, you could have made it happen. You did not do that. Brady tried to help, and you guys still did not reciprocate. You made him, from all reports, a laughable offer this morning. You dragged his ass around in the mud for two years, and guess what? He just gave the Patriots the ULTIMATE f*ck you. Good for him.
