Patriots-John Abraham; A Deal in the Works

As the first few rounds in the draft passed, I read many fans on Twitter screaming for a pass rusher. When the Patriots went through the first couple rounds without taking a defensive lineman, I kind of figured that they would be targeting one of the veterans out there and it seems as if they are targeting John Abraham. The Patriots did end up taking a DE in the seventh round (Michael Buchanan) and he is deemed by some to be the steal of the draft.

Leading up to the draft, I didn’t prioritize a defensive end because I knew that Freeney and Abraham were still floating around out there and ready to be had by anyone with the money to do so. Freeney’s asking price was just ridiculous although he recently came down to a more reasonable and yet still unreasonable number. Due to this, the Patriots seem to be at the forefront of signing the 14-year veteran John Abraham.

Abraham recorded 10 sacks last season as he seems to still be a factor. The soon-to-be 36 year-old Abraham will be a good addition to a group that could use a little less run-stopper and a little more quarterback-killer. With the continual evolution of the National Football League to a pass-first offensive attack, players that can rush the quarterback are the future of the end position.

Abraham has had nine seasons with at least nine sacks. This, hopefully, ferocious pass-rush will ultimately lead to less pressure on the secondary and result in an overall better effort on defense. If you think the defense isn’t what has been holding the Patriots back from another Super Bowl victory, then crawl out from under your rock and start watching the games. I’m sick of hearing talk about the offensive struggles in big games when the defense can’t get off the field on third down.

Brady is a top-notch quarterback who will have to learn an entirely new receiving core, which means the cohesion on defense is going to play an even more vital role in this season then it has in the past. It is time for the Patriots to get back to winning games on defense. Abraham is another piece to the puzzle and I’m excited to have him here.
