July 2012 double murder may haunt Hernandez

The woe's continue for Aaron Hernandez this morning as the Suffolk County District Attorney continues to build a case linking him to the 2012 double murder of Safiro Furtado and Daniel Abreu. According to NBC Sports and Pro Football talk, two unnamed law enforcement officials told Boston Globe reporter Maria Cramer that

Prosecutors have begun making the case to a grand jury that Hernandez should be charged with two more counts of murder.

The process involves evidence only from the prosecution, with no defense presented by Hernandez’s lawyers and a low standard of proof. If the grand jury believes probable cause exists to conclude that Hernandez is guilty, the grand jury can issue an indictment.

As of now, the trial (if there is one) will be based on all circumstantial evidence, as they do not have any witnesses to back up the fact that Hernandez may of shot Furtado and Abreu. This doesn't mean that it is a guaranteed win for Hernandez and his law team, it just makes a harder time for the Suffolk County DA. With these new charges building, it comes at a great time for the Bristol County DA, as they continue to build a case against him in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd.

When asked, Furtado's mother told the Boston Globe:

“I just want to know for certain that the person who did this has been caught. Until then, what is there for me to say? I just want justice for him. If the police are close to finding out who killed him . . . well, I just want them to tell me when they actually catch the person. That’s what my family waits for.”

It is important to note that in Massachusetts, a person must go before the grand jury for indictment before they can be placed on trial for murder. Therefore, Hernandez would have to wait until the Suffolk County DA completes their investigation before he can be tried for these murders.

As the Suffolk County DA continues to build it's case, and Hernandez keeps getting closer and closer to being their guy, it should be interesting to see how everything works out.
