Duron Harmon overtaking Tavon Wilson?

Every off-season when the NFL draft rolls around, Bill Belichick can be counted on for at least one "Who the Hell is that!?" early-mid round pick. In 2012, it was Tavon Wilson with the 48th pick of the 2nd round. And according to a report from Mike Reiss, Wilson is now being surpassed at camp by this year's mystery pick, Duron Harmon.

The selection of Harmon, who played college ball at Rutgers, gave rise to laughable stories, including that Harmon himself was watching the draft as a fan with his Mom, with zero expectation of being drafted, when he was picked. ESPN did not even have highlights prepared to play for Harmon.

But as of today, Harmon was getting reps in front of Wilson, who apparently made an error on a long ball during Tuesday's practice. It was Wilson who got left in the dust last season by Sydney Rice when he hauled in a game-winning touchdown bomb from Russel Wilson in the Patriots week 6 loss to the Seahawks.

And while it is just training camp, it isn't encouraging for Wilson that he is battling for depth chart position with a rookie who literally no one had ever heard of when he was drafted. And it raises the question as to whether or not Wilson's spot on the roster is in jeopardy.

He would join Ras-I "IR" Dowling, as a D-back selected by the Pats in the 2nd round who could potentially be on the chopping block. I do not think they will cut Wilson, but if they do, he would certainly go down as a colossal waste of a pick (as would Dowling).

But if Harmon is truly impressing at practice, it could make Wilson expendable. When comparing the two players, Mike Reiss had this to say:

He seems to have good instincts, and when the football is thrown in his direction, good ball skills. At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, his movement skills seem more fluid than 6-foot, 215-pound Wilson's.

Tavon Wilson certainly didn't look "fluid" last year as various wide receivers twisted him in a circle on their way to a long reception. But I doubt the team is going to cut ties with him this early on after selecting him with the 48th pick just one year ago. The secondary is still a highly questionable unit on this team and will need depth.

Whatever does happen, it will without a doubt be interesting to watch how the scene in the defensive backfield unfolds this season.
