Patriots release Jake Ballard and Daniel Fells

The Patriots have made two more notable cuts today, releasing tight ends Jake Ballard and Daniel Fells, neither of whom made much of an impact during their time with the Patriots.

Ballard never seemed to fully recover from his knee injury during his time in New England

Originally thought to contribute in the absence of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, neither produced very much on the field. Fells was surpassed on the depth chart by Hoo-man and rookie Zach Sudfeld. Ballard, who was heralded as a steal when the Patriots snagged him off waivers before last season, never seemed to fully recover from the major knee injury he suffered with the Giants.

The remaining tight ends on the roster are now Gronkowski, Sudfeld, and Hoomanawanui. This obviously indicates that the latter two will fill the position while Gronk is out, which it now appears will not be the 6-game absence on the PUP list. All signs point to a Gronk sighting early in the season.
