Peter King picks the Patriots to win the Super Bowl
The Patriot's will trounce the competition in the 2013 regular season, en route to a 12-4 record and top playoff seed. They kick the playoffs off by exacting revenge on the Ravens in the divisional round, and then they will top their arch-rival Broncos in the AFC Championship game, defeating Peyton Manning, Wes Welker and crew at Gillette. The season then culminates in New York with a 7-point Super Bowl victory over the Seahawks. Tom Brady will win an MVP award, and both he and Bill Belichick will solidify themselves as the greatest of all time.
Given the off-season the Patriots have had, and the substantial doubt surrounding this year's team, this seems like a pretty optimistic outlook, to say the least. But according to Peter King, this is how the upcoming NFL season will unfold. He unveils his bold predictions in Sports Illustrated's NFL-preview issue, being released this week.
As much as I would like to jump aboard the Patriot's Super Bowl bandwagon, currently being led by King and Felger, I'm not ready to crown the team Super Bowl champions yet. I agree with the line of thinking that unless the defense shows significant improvement this season, this team will not win a championship.
There are concerns on offense as well. While I believe as long as Brady is at the helm we will rank as one of the top offensive teams in the league statistically; elite defenses have stagnated the offense in big playoff games in recent years. And this year's offense is coming back with an all-new cast of characters. How well they will perform together when the games matter is yet to be seen.
And until I see both sides of the ball playing championship caliber football, the Patriots, sadly, are not my Super Bowl pick. Without a doubt, I see them as a Top 5, maybe Top 3 team in the league right now, but I will require some on-field convincing before I rank them any higher than that.
But, that being said, I really, really hope Peter King and Mike Felger are spot on. And that is something I never thought I would say.
