Steven Ridley is in a pretty bad situation right now. After putting the ball on the ground twice, the second time being returned for a touchdown, he found a firm spot on the bench for the rest of the game.
It's not something new for Ridley. The runningback struggled and was benched his rookie year for fumbles and had some trouble securing the ball last season as well.
The issues continued in training camp, so the fact that he put it on the ground not once but twice, means he might have even just been demoted. (note: the first fumble didn't count as Ridley was ruled down by contact, still doesn't matter in the eyes of Belichick and player evaluation)
It's only the first game of the season, but Bill Belichick doesn't take too kindly to fumbles. It doesn't help matters for Ridley that Shane Vereen had a great game in Ridley's stead - including a 15 yard run on the last drive to all but secure the win.
The Ridley situation will be something to monitor closely. He's a talented running back, but that doesn't mean anything if he's coughing up the ball.
