49ers sign ex-Pat Jermaine Cunningham

The 49ers announced Tuesday afternoon that they had signed former Patriots defensive end/linebacker Jermaine Cunningham, who was a free agent after being released by New England on August 31st. Cunningham was likely added primarily to add some depth at the position while star D-end Aldon Smith remains out indefinitely as he deals with his substance abuse problems.

The Patriots selected Cunningham with the 53rd pick in the 2010, a slew of picks coming out of Urban Meyer's program. Cunningham showed small flashes of potential, but ultimately only accumulated 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his time in New England. He was also suspended four games in 2012 for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Cunningham can certainly be added to the list of high-round draft picks who have failed as Patriots in recent years.
