The Patriots have faced three top 10 defenses so far

The Patriots offense has largely struggled to begin the season. Their latest 30 point output against the Atlanta Falcons was their best showing of the year to date, a far cry from last year when the Patriots offense scored 30 points like it was nothing.

With new inexperienced weapons, Tom Brady's offense has gone from being the best scoring offense in the league last year, to 20th this year. However, there may be a method to the madness.

The Pats first three opponents haven't exactly had the highest of accolades, but one thing they do have is some staunch defenses. At least, according to Football Outsiders' (the advanced football stats website) DVOA ranking, which looks at teams against the league average.

The Patriots didn't face a defense outside of the top 10 in Defense-adjusted Value Over Average until last week when they faced the 26th ranked Falcons, a team which they put up 30 points on.

The toughest defense the Patriots faced were the Buccaneers, who are second behind the Seattle Seahawks. The Jets aren't far behind at fourth while the Bills are seventh.
