Tom Brady talks watching Cowboys-Broncos after scoring just 6 points

That must've made him feel just great watching his rival Peyton Manning and his former best receiver, Wes Welker, put up 51 points in a shootout victory. All the while, Brady was on the plane back from Cincinnati where he was held out of the endzone for the first time in 52 games. The team also scored the fewest points they scored since 2003.

Tom Brady joined WEEI's Dennis and Callahan this morning and talked about the shootout in Dallas.

“You see those offenses and those offenses are extremely productive and it seems like it’s just play-after-play, they’re making plays. That’s what it takes to score points,” Brady said. “It doesn’t look like those plays are easily made. They’re just making plays. The quarterbacks both played great games. The receivers played great games. When you can get the defenses reeling a little bit and playing defensively, you know, you can do that. You can score a lot of points.

“That’s what we’re trying to be. We’re trying to be a productive offense that puts points on the board every time we go out there. But the way we’re playing right now, we’re so far from that. We’ve got to focus on the details of the plays, the improvements we can make so that we can go out there and score a touchdown. It’s not about scoring 50 points. It’s about scoring one touchdown first. Then hopefully that one touchdown can lead to another.”

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady seem to be having complete opposite seasons. Manning has all the talent in the world around him and is on pace to shatter NFL records. Of course, keeping up that pace is nearly impossible, but his first month of the season at nearly 40 is extremely impressive. He's found himself in a great situation in Denver and has proven to have made the right choice in free-agency last year.

Brady on the other hand, hasn't even been the best player on his own team. With a dearth of talent around him, and his best weapons sitting out with injuries, the Patriots have still managed to fight to a 4-1 record. Still, it's hard to feel confident that this Patriots team could survive a shootout like the Broncos-Cowboys game yesterday afternoon. Not that that is sign of whether your team can win a Super Bowl, if anything giving up that many points indicates the opposite, but it does prove the once astounding Pats offense has a long way to go in this pass-happy league.

“We all are capable of doing more than that, but that requires making the plays that are there when we have them. When you play good defenses, they’re not going to give them up easily. You have to go out and earn them and you’ve got to make tough throws. You’ve got to make tough catches. You’ve got to make tough blocks. You’ve got to make tough runs. It’s not like we hand it off and ran it off for 50-yard touchdowns. Some nights you do that and sometimes it’s great. Usually don’t do it against good defenses. When you play a good defense you’ve got to earn it. Cincinnati really forced us to earn it. We had some situations there in the first half where we could’ve done a better job. In the second half we got some field position and never really took advantage of the field position. When we did get scoring opportunities we didn’t take advantage of those. At the end of the game we’re in a situation where it’s kind of an untimely situation where we need to throw the ball on every down and just don’t get the job done."

The offense will get a real test this Sunday when the New Orleans Saints come to Foxborough. As good as the Patriots defense has been, the Saints offense has been just as good. Led by Drew Brees, they will find a way to put points on the board, can Tom Brady and the rookies keep up?
