Diving into the details of Julian Edelman's four year contract

Julian Edelman will be a Patriot for many years to come. It was reported over the weekend that he had signed a contract to bring him back to the New England Patriots.

What we didn't know was, how much was the deal?

After Edelman hinted that it was for four years in an interview on WAAF radio this morning, we've finally gotten the exact numbers.

Overall, this works out to be a max value of $4.75 million a year for Edelman. That's not terrible by any stretch, but probably not what the receiver was hoping for after a breakout 105 catch, 1056 yard and 6 tochdown year. The $8 million guaranteed is also less than Danny Amendola got in his contract.

The ceiling was basically set at around $6 million/year after that is what Wes Welker received in a two year deal with the Broncos last season. Certainly though, while Edelman outproduced Welker in 2013, he is not going to get that money. Welker is the best slot receiver in the league, had proved to be durable and consistent for years, and he got $6 million/year.

Edelman should be happy for the huge increase, as he was making just $715,000 last season.

The Pats number one receiver had a couple other suitors on the market, but ultimately made no visits outside of San Francisco. He told WAAF this morning that the "decision wasn't tough" to stay in New England.

Glad to have him back.
