Patriots have plans to lock up Revis long term

Welcome to New England, Darrelle Revis. Revis signed a 1-year/$12 million deal with the New England Patriots today shortly after being cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Now for the interesting part. The deal does NOT prohibit the Patriots in any way, shape or form, from placing the franchise tag on Revis, according to Albert Breer (below). Breer also noters (below) that the Patriots have designs to lock him up long term after a "feeling out period."

Personally, I think this is pretty smart on the part of the Patriots - you pay him for one year, see how it works, and then decide whether he's worth keeping around long term. If Revis plays the way he's capable of, which I think he'll do, then it's pretty straightforward - the Patriots work on a long term deal. Of course, if he suffers another major injury, then the Pats don't bring him back next year.
