Vince Wilfork asking to be released in New England

The Patriots may have added a huge piece to their defense in Darrelle Revis, but they lost another one.

The two sides have been in talks the past few weeks about restructuring Wilfork's contract.

The face of the Pats defense has a cap hit of $11,600,000 which is obviously a little too steep for a team that is so cap strapped right now. The Pats want to make more moves, but they are seriously hindered by Vince's number.

Wilfork, however, is quite stubborn and apparently was not amicable to the idea of restructuring his deal. Releasing Wilfork was always a possibility, but due to the good relationship between he and the team it was always thought that the two sides could come to an agreement. The Pats save around $8 million by releasing Wilfork, and will have $3 million in dead money.

He is coming off of an achilles injury, very concerning for a 32 year old big man.

Wilfork missed all but 3 1/4 games last season, and the team's run defense suffered tremendously because of it, they were the third worst run defense in the league.
