Patriots draft workouts: A.J. McCarron highlights this week's group

Watching who the Patriots bring in for workouts is always a good way to get a sense of the positions the Pats will be focusing on in the draft. The team has had several tight ends in for visits already, but this week they continued to focus on quarterback and both sides of the line of scrimmage, bringing in a defensive lineman as well as two offensive lineman. They also worked out a receiver, Geraldo Boldewijn, from Boise State.

The Patriots biggest workout is undoubtedly with Alabama QB, A.J. McCarron.

The QB is expected to go somewhere in the second or third round. With Ryan Mallett entering the last year of his contract, and Brady nearing the end of his career, the Pats have to think about their backup quarterback situation more than ever.

The team has worked out virtually all of the top names at quarterback this year, including Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles.

NationalFootballPost:
One of those could potentially be the New England Patriots, which McCarron reportedly visited on Wednesday according to NFL.com's Gil Brandt.

It makes sense for New England to be interested. Alabama coach Nick Saban and Patriots coach Bill Belichick are close friends, so the visit could be the result of a well-placed recommendation. In addition, the Patriots could consider bringing in a new backup for Tom Brady and seeing what kind of value on the trade market they could get for current No. 2 QB Ryan Mallett.

McCarron wasn't the only player the Pats worked out, nor was he the only quarterback. Here is the rest of the players brought into Foxborough this week.

The New England Patriots are conducting a private workout today for Boise State wide receiver Geraldo Boldewijn and offensive linemen Matt Paradis and Charles Leno, according to league sources.
