Kevin Williams turned down more money from Pats to play for Seahawks
Back in early June, veteran free-agent Kevin Williams expressed interest in teaming up with Vince Wilfork and joining the Patriots, telling a reporter to have the team "look him up." Well, the Patriots did just that, bringing the defensive in for a visit last week and according to reports, offering him a contract in excess of the 1-year, $2 million deal one who ultimately accepted from the Seattle Seahawks.
The fact that Seattle just won a Super Bowl in such convincing fashion with a bruising defensive unit certainly carried some clout in Williams decision, but perhaps he also felt he would have a bigger role there than what was apparently laid out by Bill Belichick during Williams' visit to New England, when the Pats head coach stated he would be a "rotational player" who could "compete for a spot."
The acquisition of Williams may be a bit of payback from Seattle, who reportedly had their sights set on Dominique Easley before the Patriots selected him. Following the pick, Seattle immediately traded down.
Williams would have been a nice addition to the Patriots interior front that currently consists of Wilfork,Tommy Kelly, Easley, Chris Jones, Joe Vellano, Sealver Siliga. This is a strong group at the position, however there are legitimate health concerns across the board. Whether or not the Patriots decide to pursue another veteran at the position is something to keep an eye on.
