ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss says Devin McCourty extension matter of 'when,' not 'if'

ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss, in his "Quick-hit thoughts around the NFL & Pats" column, said that he felt a contract extension for Patriots safety Devin McCourty was a matter of "when" and not "if."

Reiss says on the possibility of a McCourty extension:

"Media reports last month that the Patriots had reached out to defensive back Devin McCourty regarding a contract extension might have sparked an expectation that a new pact could be in the offing, but nothing is imminent at this time. I still think it’s more a matter of “when” it happens than “if,” but my sense is that the Patriots don’t feel a need to rush things. In the last year of his initial rookie contract, McCourty is scheduled to earn a base salary of $3.9 million and count $5.1 million against the salary cap."

Reiss's speculation is definitely warranted, as McCourty has turned into an excellent defensive back after some questionable years as a cornerback. It is well-documented that the Patriots undervalue players that some other teams may not (Wes Welker, Lawyer Milloy, Richard Seymour, to name a few), but McCourty is one they should not let get away.

While many believe he is a better fit at safety, he can also slide into a cornerback role if need be, and that could be a value commodity to the Patriots in the event Darrelle Revis leaves after this season. Additionally, McCourty is only 26 and is in the last year of his rookie deal.

His stats from 2013-14 might not necessarily reflect it (69 combined tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception), but McCourty is definitely in line for a raise.

The biggest question is if the Patriots feel the same way the fans and the media do.
