Patriots claim RB Tyler Gaffney from Panthers

The Patriots have claimed RB Tyler Gaffney from the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers were planning on placing Gaffney on IR but if they place a player on IR during training camp he must first clear waivers. Apparently, the Patriots liked him enough to claim off of waivers even though he will be missing the season due to a knee injury suffered over the summer.

Most coaches take the risk that players will clearly waivers, especially a 6th round draft pick. But Belichick has history of signing players off of the IR. Just a few years ago Belichick claimed Jake Ballard off of injury waivers from the Giants.

It will be interesting to see how the Patriots will use Gaffney, but we will have to wait for next training camp to see his skills. Gaffney posted monster numbers in his senior season at Stanford, totaling 1709 rushing yards over 330 carries for the Cardinals. Along withe being the monstrous rushing yards he totaled 21 touchdowns and a 5.7 YPC total. He was a workhorse for the Cardinals, and it will be interesting to see who he pans out next training camp.

For those of haven't seen him play check out the video below.

Good move by the Patriots?
