Where would Jeff Samardzija fit on the Patriots?

In light of the recent MLB All-Star Game, we here at Patriots Life decided to take a look at a notable two-sport athlete: Oakland Athletics pitcher and MLB All-Star Jeff Samardzija, not indiscriminately, of course, but because he once believed he might play for the Patriots.

Samardzija, as reported by WEEI’s Rob Bradford, was expected to be drafted in the first-round of the 2007 NFL Draft at wideout. He chose to pursue baseball, however, after the Chicago Cubs picked him up with a fifth-round pick in 2006.

He played at Notre Dame and learned the Patriots system from former New England offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who was the head coach of the Fighting Irish at the time. Samardzija claims:

“The word from coach and other guys was that they were going to try and trade up to try and get me based on the fact it would be a seamless transition into their offense considering I already ran it.”

I guess it worked out alright for Jeff, playing in the Midsummer Classic and all. But, imagine how good the Patriots intrasquad softball team would be? Don’t forget Tom Brady was drafted by the Montreal Expos.

Samardzija on the mound, Brady behind the plate…Wilfork batting cleanup. Forget about it.
