Defense improves and offense shines as Patriots win 42-35 over Eagles
The Patriots got off to a rolling start and never slowed down on their way to a 42-35 victory over the Eagles. Tom Brady went 8/10 for 81 yards with a touchdown pass on a back shoulder pass in the corner of the end zone to Kenbrell Thompkins. Brady was also intercepted by Eagles cornerback Cary Williams, which was returned for a TD. Jimmy Garoppolo was first off the bench for the Patriots at the quarterback position, he put in another solid performance going 6/12 for 72 yards and two TDs. Ryan Mallett bounced back after his rough first preseason game against the Redskins going 6/9 for 85 yards and a rushing and passing TD.
The rushing game found its stride again after a dismal showing against the Washington Redskins, as they ran the ball 45 times for 251 yards. Including Jonas Gray rushing for 98 yards on 12 carries.
Brian Tyms, Brandon LaFell, James Develin and Kenbrell Thompkins all accounted for touchdown receptions in the game.
The Patriots defense started off as hot as the offense as Malcolm Butler forced a fumble on the first play, he later recovered a fumble as he continues to raise his stock. The Patriots D looked solid recovering two fumbles and recording two interceptions.
Another side note to keep track of is the fact that there were 21 total penalties called tonight, an interesting story to follow if this many penalties continue into the regular season.
The Patriots host the Carolina Panthers next Friday night, August 22nd @ 7:30.
