Gronk is still not cleared for contact

Patriots fans had to be thrilled at the outset of training camp when star tight-end Rob Gronkowski was cleared to practice, and there has been a relatively optimistic general attitude about his health and chances of playing in the season opener.

Still rehabbing from a nasty ACL injury last season, Gronk did not travel with the team for its first preseason game this past week for "precautionary reasons." More details regarding the State of Gronk have emerged today, as it is being reported that he has not yet been cleared for contact drills.

Speaking on his participation and rehab, Gronk had this to say on Sunday (Quote from ProFootballTalk):

“I’m going full-speed in the drills I’m doing, but they’re just limiting the drills I can do. Most likely, when I’m cleared for contact, it will be full-go, too,” Gronkowski said.

Gronkowski said he and the team just want to exercise caution to make sure that he’s fully healthy when the season starts.

“Just a little time off to let the knee heal a little bit more. You know, you can’t always be grinding on it 24/7 off an injury. You have to let it heal,” he said. “I’m feeling better since the time off, so, it’s going well. My body kind of needed it, my knee needed it, that rest, when they went to Virginia. It was good progress.”

The good news coming out of training camp seemed like a step in the right direction towards avoiding a situation like the one heading into last season, when rumors swirled about a disconnect between Camp Gronk and the Patriots. There is no doubt he appears to be much closer to game ready than he was at this time last year, but reports like these will certainly have fans wondering whether or not big #87 will be on the field for the teams season opener.
