Jerod Mayo missing from second straight practice

In perhaps the most concerning injury news to come out of Patriots camp yet, veteran linebacker Jerod Mayo was once again not spotted on the practice field today, putting his status for Friday's game against the Eagles in jeopardy.

After being present at practice Sunday and Monday, Mayo has not been seen, and no information has been made available about his status or injury (if that is in fact why he is missing). ESPN Boston beat writer Mike Reiss highlighted the impact this could have on Friday's game and beyond, if the injury is significant:

Veteran linebacker Jerod Mayo was not present for the second straight day, and it is unclear what is keeping him out. Because the Eagles play with an up-tempo style, it stresses communication for the opposing defense, and Dont'a Hightower seemed to be the player tapped to fill Mayo's void, just as he was in 2013.

Mayo is coming off a season cut short after he tore his pectoral muscle on October 13th against the Saints. Shortly after he was placed on injured reserve. Up to that point, the defense had flashed potential as an elite unit. But after injuries to Aqib Talib and Mayo, things went downhill. Hightower struggled as the leader of the defense, and as we saw in the AFC Championship game, the defense had a hard time getting strong offenses off the field.

This is definitely one to keep an eye on as the team moves closer to the season opener in Miami, as Mayo is most definitely a linchpin for the revamped defense for 2014.
