Jets and Giants just can't seem to get along
Associated Press, USA Today:
Willie Colon and the New York Jets heard Andre Williams loud and clear.
"At the end of the day, that's our house, and we consider it our house," Colon said of MetLife Stadium. "The only way to solve it is to beat them."
Williams added some spice to the preseason matchup when he told the New York Post that the Giants "are the real New York team." Jets coach Rex Ryan jokingly fired back at the running back, saying he last saw Williams getting "smoked by Clemson" last year.
The Jets are back in their familiar surroundings at Hofstra University. Head coach Rex Ryan was responding to Giants rookie RB, Andre Williams. Rex's son, Seth was a redshirt wide receiver for Clemson University whose team held Williams to 70 yards on 24 carries in last season's game against Boston College.
Jeff Freier, SB Nation:
The two teams met for the very first time in an exhibition game at the Yale Bowl seven months after the Jets' stunning Super Bowl III upset. The NFL and AFL still didn't care of each other (nor did the Giants and Jets), and the newer league was still viewed as inferior.
Not only did the Giants lose to the young upstarts but it was the final nail in the coffin for coach Allie Sherman, who was fired before the first regular-season game. And it was ex-Giant Don Maynard who led the crowd in a chorus of "Good-bye, Allie" from the sidelines as the game came to an end.
The two head coaches couldn't be more different. New York Giants future HOF head coach, Tom Coughlin is secure in his surroundings. Week 3 is just another exhibition game. For Rex Ryan of the New York Jets, he is in the final year of his contract. He won't go quietly.
Associated Press, USA Today:
Ryan expects the game against the Giants to be "physical" and not necessarily "chippy." Colon, however, added: "I think we're a chippy team by nature."
