Patriots fall to Redskins 23-6 in first preseason game

With many stars and starters sitting out the activities tonight for the Patriots, the eyes of fans and scouts alike turned to Ryan Mallett as he lead the team through the first half of play. Mallett (5 of 12 for 55 yards) and the rest of the Patriots underwhelmed during that first half. The offense only managed one long field goal attempt which was missed. The defense allowed a field goal to the first team offense of the Redskins, and that was followed up by another 10 points as Kirk Cousins lead the team from Washington D.C.

Jimmy Garoppolo had more success in his Pats debut going 9 of 13 for 141 yards and a touchdown. The Redskins continued to benefit from great field position and turnovers, tallying another 10 points in the second half before Garoppolo found Brian Tyms for a 26 yard touchdown to avoid the shutout.

The Patriots play their next preseason game August 15th against Chip Kelly's Philadelphia Eagles.
