Writing was on the wall for DJ Williams and Marcus Forston

In a move that should have surprised no one, yesterday the New England Patriots released TE DJ Williams and DL Marcus Forston.

After last Friday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles in which Williams did not play and Forston looked underwhelming (to say the least), the Patriots were quick to cut down to 87 players in advance of next week's cut down to 75 players. But could the Patriots be bringing in someone else? First we should look at why these players were cut and what their future might look like.

For Forston, despite being on the team the last couple years, and contributing at times, the Patriots DL as a whole is significantly improved from years past. The interior line specifically has some good depth depending on who makes the roster. With Wilfork, Kelly, Easley, Jones, Siliga, and potentially Jerel Worthy all on the roster, and players like Joe Vellano still on the outside looking in, Forston was a very long shot. Following his poor effort on a touchdown screen pass from Mark Sanchez to Henry Josey, I believe the coaching staff decided it'd be better to let him look for another job sooner rather than later.

As for DJ Williams, I am actually glad he was released. For all of his time in New England, the guy just never played. Despite playing in a few games last year, he never caught a pass from Tom Brady, and was rarely seen on the field. Being a smaller move tight end, in an offense that likes to get the ball to that position, he should have contributed in SOME way, but never did. This offseason, Williams has battled several hush-hush injuries, and according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Williams still has a ways to go before he's even able to step on the field.

Despite his suggestion that the Patriots may re-sign him, I just don't see them waiting on an injury-prone back up player to an injury-prone starter.

As for if the Patriots will bring someone else on...I have no idea. The rumors of Tony Gonzalez potentially eyeing a comeback for a contender should be quelled a tad. He is baiting Denver to see if they'll sign him with his recent positive feedback of them for a chance to finally get his ring. Could he sign with the Patriots? Maybe, but don't count on it.

The other injury duo of Jermichael Finley and Dustin Keller should also be quelled a tad. If they have not been signed yet, what makes you think the Patriots will sign them now? Especially after missing out on a lot of time to learn the playbook and be with the team. If anything they may be just preparing for the cut downs and giving players closer to the bubble more chances to prove their worth.
