Dante Scarnecchia comments on Pats O-Line situation

Long-time Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia spoke to the media today while attending Matt Light's Celebrity Shootout in Rhode Island, and not surprisingly fielded some questions about the current issues facing the 2014 team's offensive line.

While "Scar" did not get into much detail, he did voice support for new coach Dave DeGuglielmo. This comes on the same day that Greg Bedard took to the airwaves to say that he has heard the new coach is "unpopular with players," and even further, was part of the reason why Logan Mankins refused to renegotiate his contract.

Here is what Scar had to say earlier today (From BostonHerald.com):

"It’s always been, you’ve got the guys you got, and you’ve got to coach ‘em. And that’s exactly what they’re doing," Scarnecchia said. "They’re coaching the guys that are there. They’re working with the guys that are there. I’m sure they’re doing that. I know they’re doing everything they can to make it as good as they can make it. But, hey, best of luck to them. It ain’t easy."

It's not easy, and Scarnecchia said it would take time to make it all work, given all the moving parts on the line.

Asked if he felt awkward hearing fans plead for him to return, even if just as a consultant for new offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo, Scarnecchia shook his head.

"I don’t pay any attention to that," he said. "They have a very good coach there. He’s going to do a great job."

For the record, he said he was happy in retirement, and was not tempted to return in any capacity.

The calls for Scarnecchia's return to the New England coaching staff have grown louder with each punishing hit absorbed by Tom Brady, courtesy of an unblock defensive pass rusher. But as the article notes, the 66 year old coach is content in retirement.

Scar ain't coming back. For now, the Patriots are going to have to make due with what they have, both in terms of players and coaches. Let's hope that starts to look better than it has through three games.
