Former Patriots coordinator fired from Kansas job

Charlie Weis's time in Kansas has been prematurely cut short. After a disappointing 23-0 home loss to the Texas Longhorns the Jayhawks decided they had seen enough of Weis's coaching in Lawrence. Kansas was 6-22 under Weis.

Weis's career in college football has not worked out so well. Weis started his college coaching career at his alma mater of Notre Dame in 2004 and midway through the season the Irish extended his contract into 2015. During his time at Notre Dame Weis was able to recruit very well but suffered embarrassing losses including snapping a 43 game winning streak against Navy in 2006, a 41-14 thumping by LSU in the 2007 Sugar Bowl, and losing to a mediocre Syracuse team in 2008. The Fighting Irish let Charlie go in November of 2009.

Weis went down to Gainesville in 2011 to be the offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators. While there the offense struggled and ranked 71st in points scored per game.

In 2012 Weis took over the head coaching job at the University of Kansas replacing Turner Gill. Once again Weis struggled in the NCAA with a 1-11 and a 3-9 record his first two seasons.

Strangely Weiss always seemed to have success at the professional level. During his time in New England the Patriots won three super bowls and during a small stint in Kansas City in 2010 the Chiefs went 10-6 and earned a spot in the playoffs. Why Weis did so well in the NFL and so lousy in the NCAA is anyone's guess. It could be his coaching style, play calling, or coaching scheme.

On the other side of the coin Nick Saban will probably go down as one of the greatest college coaches of all time, winning a slew of championships for Alabama and LSU. However when given the head coach position for the Miami Dolphins he missed the playoffs his first year going 9-7. He also committed a major blunder in signing Daunte Culpepper instead of then free agent Drew Brees in 2006 resulting in a losing season and a pink slip.

With the Patriots offense struggling, ranking 29th in yards per game, it may be possible that Belichik will let McDaniels go and reunite Weis with Brady.

Personally, after watching that dumpster fire of a game I believe no one's job is safe. Especially the offensive coordinator who has Tom Brady under center and can barely move the ball.

Do you think the Patriots should consider bringing back Weis in some capacity? Should Weis take over as offensive coordinator? Let us know in the comments section!
