Rex Ryan: We're desperate but not dysfunctinal
Associated Press |
If there is one thing that Rex Ryan isn't afraid of its talking. Even if it means he puts his foot in his mouth. As the 1-5 Jets prepare to play the 4-2 Patriots on Thursday night Rex is doing a lot of talking. Mostly about how his team is losing.
Even thought the 2014 season is only entering week 7, the Jets are already in desperation mode. Something Rex Ryan will readily admit.
Rex on desperation: "As bad as its gets. Desperate to say the least"

Even though desperation has set in Rex still has confidence in his team. So much so he believes they can still make the playoffs after a 1-5 start.
HC Rex Ryan still "confident" his 1-win #jets can make playoffs. "I believe in this team," he said via conference call with #Patriots media

False Bravado, maybe. Not knowing how far fetched that would be, probably. Whatever the reason Rex still believes his team can make the playoffs one thing is for sure, He is going to need a lot more production out of his offense. The Jets offense ranks near the bottom in every category.
Boston Globe
Most of the Jets’ problems have been on offense. They’re 30th in total yards, and last in the league in passing yardage, with Geno Smith throwing for 1,139 yards, and more interceptions (seven) than touchdowns (six). He’s also been sacked 12 times.
Its not hard to understand why their offense has struggled. When your starting quarterback is blowing off team meetings to go to the movies and your back up QB is talking about being ill prepared you're going to have issues. Those reasons plus just being the Jets in general has led them to being labeled dysfunctional, a label that Rex Ryan doesn't like.
Ryan scoffed at any mention of his job security – “I don’t look at that. It’s never been about me. I never flinch one time about it” – and was defensive when asked about the dysfunction that seems to permeate with his teams.
“I think you guys … saying it’s dysfunctional is maybe a perception that you have, but it’s certainly not the case here,” Ryan said. “We haven’t won as much as we want, clearly, but this is far from a dysfunctional team, and you’ll see it when we get there. This is a good football team, we just haven’t produced the wins yet.”
Desperate and dysfunctional are not words a coach wants to be throwing around. Especially a coach that is on the hot seat like Rex Ryan. There is a good chance if the Jets miss the playoffs again this year Rex won't be the coach anymore. And after they play the Patriots on Thursday night, the talk of desperation will most likely get louder instead of going away.
