Colts running back Trent Richardson continues to stumble

Mark J. Rebilas / USA TODAY

2012 was a banner year for Trent Richardson. He declared for the 2012 draft after having an amazing college career winning national championships and setting records. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns as the third overall selection. But times have changed.

Since being traded to the Colts Richardson has been one of the worst running backs in the NFL rushing for only 391 yards and 2 touchdowns. Last night Richardson rushed for 7 attempts and gained 0 yards. As a Patriots fan I was elated to see Richardson be handed the ball because that meant the Colts were going no where.

The Colts starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw may not see any action the rest of the season after suffering a serious ankle injury last night. Indy now needs Richardson to step up and the chances of that are pretty bleak. If Richardson doesn't improve he may go down as one of the worst trades in Colts history and could cost Indy a playoff spot.

On the the opposite sideline you find a very different story. Jonas Gray was an undrafted free agent in 2013 and was cut by the Miami Dolphins. He ended up on the Ravens practice squad and found his way onto the Patriots in January of this year. Last night Gray rushed for 199 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. In a single night an undrafted free agent scored more touchdowns than Richardson has all year and accumulated over half his rushing yards.

When asked about his new role as the workhorse of the team Richardson responded:

It's going to be what it is... Will it be bigger shoes for me to fill? Of course. I have to make sure I step up and do what I have to do.

What do you think of Richardson now being the feature back for the Colts. Will he redeem himself with more carries or will he continue his campaign of mediocrity? Let us know in the comments section below!
