Report: former Patriots backup QB Brian Hoyer to sign with Texans

Reports are surfacing this morning that indicate Cleveland Browns quarterback and former Patriots backup Brian Hoyer will sign with the Houston Texans when free agency opens tomorrow. The details of the contract are not yet known.

Hoyer and Texans head coach Bill O'Brien are familiar with each other from their days in New England, so that likely factored into the interest between both parties. The Texans already have Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Savage under contract, and just minutes ago re-signed another former Patriots backup, Ryan Mallet, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Mallet was traded from New England to Houston last season.

There's no word yet on whether or not Hoyer would automatically become the starter in Houston or if it will be an open competition. But with Fitzpatrick still on the roster, the guess here is that the job will be won in training camp.

The New York Jets, who have seemingly been interested in everyone this off-season, had also expressed interest in Hoyer.
