Malcolm Butler's reason for OTA absence unkown

Malcolm Butler made one of the most surprising and clutch plays in Super Bowl history.

His interception of Russell Wilson at the goal line preserved the Patriots Super Bowl victory and catapulted him into the national spotlight where he was seen everywhere from Disneyland to award shows to every sports show in the nation. But now that its time to get back to work on the football field he hasn't been seen.

If Butler's absence from OTA's isn't injury related then its a real mystery as to why he isn't out there. Sure, all of his overnight success could have gone to his head and he wants to hold out for a bigger contract. Except that he can't. He signed a rookie free agent contract with the Patriots and per the rules in the CBA can not renegotiate that contract until the end of the third season.

It's too early to panic and think that Butler has become a malcontent. For all we know he has cleared his absences with Bill Belichick and we just aren't privy to that information. But with the exodus of cornerbacks from the Patriots roster this offseason, he would be wise to capitalize all he can and grab a starting spot.
