Patriots sign veteran DB Derek Cox

It didn't take very long for the Patriots to fill the roster spot vacated by Brandon Spikes.

The team has signed veteran defensive back Derek Cox. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Cox, a former member of the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Diego Chargers, has played a total of five seasons in the NFL and has amassed 204 tackles, 13 interceptions and 39 passes defended.

Cox has played in 63 contests and has started 56 of them. His most recent stint, albeit three days, came with the Baltimore Ravens. He signed with them on Aug. 27, 2014, only to be cut on Aug. 30.

Cox will likely provide some depth at the corner back position and on special teams.
