NerdWallet.com tabs Patriots as smartest spenders in sports

Add spending to the long list of things the Patriots do well. NerdWallet.com put together a study that examined how teams in the NFL, NBA and MLB spend their money, and the Patriots topped the list.

According to Phil Perry of CSNNE.com, the study dates all the way back to the year 2000, right around the time the Patriots began their run of dominance.

As for the other Boston teams in the study, the Celtics came in at 33 (ironic?) and the Red Sox at 67.

The study took into account regular season victories and championships won since 2000 to create an "adjusted wins" total for each team. From there, the adjusted wins total of each team in their respective leagues were divided by the team's share of the league's total payroll. The study then created a payroll efficiency index with an average score of 1. So the higher the number, the better off a team is, according to the study.

You can view the numbers in the graph below. You can also read more from the study here.
