Visanthe Shiancoe joins talented Patriots tight end group

Visanthe Shiancoe has signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the New England Patriots , sources with knowledge of the deal confirmed to NFL Network and NFL.com on Tuesday.

Shiancoe had been negotiating deals with the Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles before making his decision Tuesday night
.

Earlier there were reports that Shiancoe had worked out for the Patriots. Apparently the decision came down to New England and Philadelphia and Shiancoe chose to join the Pats. Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are locks for the roster but things get fishy after that, which is likely where Shiancoe saw opportunity.

After going nearly all of last year with only two tight ends, and seeing how that hurt the team when Gronk was hurt in the Superbowl, Bill Belichick is determined to build quality depth this year.

Daniel Fells starts camp on the PUP list after sustaining an injury in earlier off season programs. The other tight end on the roster is Tyler Urban who is far from a sure bet to make the team in September.

Shiancoe gives the Pats a reliable veteran who has proven he can produce in the NFL. At that price, its well worth the invesment. Shiancoe had a great year in 2009 but hasn't performed to that level since. Granted, the Minnesota quarterback situation hasn't been great since then either.
