Free Agent Sebastian Vollmer Underwent Knee Surgery

A source confirms one of the Patriots top free agents Sebastian Vollmer underwent arthroscopic knee surgery at the conclusion of this season. Karen Guregian from the Boston Herald reported the surgery took place recently, in fact, so what does that mean for Vollmer and the Patriots?

Anytime a free agent has to have surgery it generally brings the demand for that player down as well as the price because it’s just too risky for some teams that are flirting with the CAP ceiling. This in turn brings the value for signing Vollmer way up in the Patriots case because the open market will most likely take that stance and his dollar value will decrease. Vollmer struggled with the knee for most of 2012, but only had to sit out one game and that game was on a short week (only four days rest).

In an earlier article, I agreed with the general premise that the Patriots should focus on defense (especially in the secondary) this offseason; however I noted that in this year’s draft, the Patriots might be inclined to grab an offensive lineman with their first pick. Vollmer missed the 2012 training camp with a lower back injury and even though this surgery was reported as being “routine” it would sure be a good idea to have a little insurance on the line in case the knee flares up again.

Let us not forget how we have, possibly, the best offensive line coach in Dante Scarnecchia and drafting at that position, the Patriots have had great success; much more so than drafting cover corners. In essence I think the patriots will sign Vollmer at a much lower rate of pay which frees up more room for defensive needs. The news on the Patriots has been significant this offseason and it seems like every day there is some new issue or news coming out so keep posted on PatriotsLife for all the breaking stories.
