Donald Thomas Most Likely Gone From Pats

With all the talk about Welker, Edelman, Talib and Vollmer, offensive lineman Donald Thomas has gone under the radar on the list of key free agents. Donald Thomas stepped in and filled a valuable role in 2012 when Mankins went down with an injury and missed 7 games in which Thomas stepped in and played exceptional and according to a league source, he will test free agency.

I have always prioritized depth on both the offensive and defensive lines and I consider it extremely. important. Those guys are constantly getting shoved, knees fallen into, tackled to the ground more than any other position in the NFL, so it’s inevitable that they miss games. The value of good depth at offensive lineman can’t be understated because if you don’t block you can’t run the ball and if you don’t block you can’t pass the ball; so basically you will suck. By the way, he’s also the backup left guard which is much more difficult to learn and protects Brady’s blind side.

Some teams will view Thomas as a starter and if that’s so, he will be gone due to more opportunity for money and playing time. Thomas was signed by the Patriots in 2011 after being drafted by the Dolphins and then playing a short time in Detroit.

The Patriots have a good amount invested in the guard position already so they won’t be able to pay him what a team will pay him to be a starter. With a lack of really good offensive lineman in free agency, I think Thomas will be gone. It’s yet another thing to add to the list of Patriots off-season tasks.
