Amendola; Good Fit for Pats or Not?

According to multiple reports the Patriots will be interested in Danny Amendola from the Rams when it comes time for the “Legal Tampering Period” (as if they haven’t already started). Amendola will most likely be a target if the Patriots lose out in the Wes Welker drama. If they try and stick Amendola in to replace Welker I say poop, garbage, no, bad and why.

Amendola certainly has decent stats when he’s out there and I’m not predicting a failure, but if Welker goes somewhere else, don’t you want to shift Hernandez into the slot and spend some money on an outside guy? Lloyd’s all but gone, and you have Jake Ballard coming back after his year off to insert into Hernandez’s spot. I don’t think that the Patriots need to go out and sign an outside guy and another slot guy like is being reported.

Amendola has a similar skill set to Welker and caught 63 balls in the 11 games he played last season. Games played since he came into the league are: 2009: 14; 2010: 16; 2011: 1; 2012: 11. Durability could be a question just as it is in the case of Julian Edelman here. Just to give you a comparison, Edelman came into the league the same here as Amendola and has played 48 total games to Amendola’s 42; and I don’t know about you, but I think Edelman misses a lot.

Even though I don’t love the move, let’s face it, he’ll be with Tom Brady who can elevate slot receivers to new heights. I don’t foresee a terrible drop off between the two, but Welker stays on the field, knows the offense and I just don’t have the same confidence in Amendola.
