The dream of Michael Lombardi overpaying for Ryan Mallett is dead

Is Ryan Mallett the next Tom Brady or the next Brian Hoyer?

Ever since Michael Lombardi was hired as the Browns GM, Patriots fans hoped and prayed that he would give the Patriots something in return for Ryan Mallett.

The reason? As an NFL Analyst, Lombardi raved about Mallet. It was his stated opinion before that draft that Mallett just needed to go to a situation where he wouldn't start right away but could learn from a veteran quarterback. Can you think of any more perfect situation than being drafted by the Patriots and learning under Tom Brady?

Of course, Lombardi also claimed he would've traded for former Patriots backup Brian Hoyer if he had been the 49ers GM, and he made no effort to sign him this off-season.

Now, we can finally put to rest the rumors of the Browns giving the Patriots a first or second round pick for Mallett.

Jason Campbell apparently has some experience in the offensive system they'll be running in Cleveland, and that's the cited reason for the signing. He'll also be a nice veteran backup to a young QB depth chart that contains the 25 year old Colt McCoy in his fourth year and the 29 year old Brandon Weeden in his second (Why the last Browns GM drafted a 28 year old rookie in the first round? I have no idea).

The Patriots have been asking for top dollar for Ryan Mallett as they want to at least get more than the third round pick they spent on him. It's pretty unlikely they'll get that.
