Patriots looking hard at Wreh-Wilson

Blidi Wreh-Wilson is probably not a name most Patriots fans are familiar with. But it is looking increasingly likely that he could become a fixture in the team's secondary beginning this upcoming season.

I wrote about Wreh-Wilson early in March after draft expert Todd McShay predicted the team would select the cornerback out of Uconn with their first round pick. It looks like Mr. McShay was on to something, as Bill Belichick and a number of other Pats staffers visited UConn's pro day last Wednesday. As Mike Reiss writes, it is believed the purpose of the trip was to get a better look at the corner who appeared to be piquing their interest.

Wreh-Wilson during his time at UConn

No one would contest the fact that the secondary was the weakest area of last year's Patriots team. While the resigning of Aqib Talib stabilized a unit that was very much up in the air; question marks surrounding Alfonzo Dennard (facing possible jail time), Tavon Wilson (capable of being a starting safety?), Ras-I Dowling (lives on the IR) all remain.

That is why it does not come as much of a surprise that the Patriots are taking a close look at Wreh-Wilson, a big physical corner who Reiss compared to Devin McCourty. In the previously linked article, Reiss had the following to say about Wreh-Wilson as a player:

"From a football perspective, Wreh-Wilson is said to have excellent size and length, runs well, can excel in man coverage, but lacks a bit in the playmaking area. If I was putting together a short list of prospects the Patriots might consider with one of their top picks, wherever it winds up landing, Wreh-Wilson would be on it."

A player who can excel in man-coverage would be a valuable piece in a secondary that has been extremely unreliable over the past couple of seasons. If the team does in fact decide to use one of their early picks on Wreh-Wilson; let's hope works out better than the last Huskie corner- Darius Butler.

While I don't know all that much about Wreh-Wilson and have never seen him play; if he does possess the assets Reiss mentions I would certainly be on board with selecting him. After impressing at his Pro Day, Wreh-Wilson appears to have a number of other suitors in addition to New England, so if they want him they would most likely have to take him in the first or second round. Whether or not they value another corner over a dynamic pass rusher or other position, we will see. But it says a lot that Bill and his squad appear to be so intrigued by this particular player.
